Introduction to Wizard of Oz
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is one of the true classics of American literature. It has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for
over four generations. Originally published in 1900, it was the first truly American fairy tale, as L. Frank Baum crafted a
wonderful story out of familiar items such as a cornfield scarecrow, a mechanical woodman, and a humbug wizard who used
old-fashioned hokum to express that universal theme, "There's no place like home."
After their Kansas house is swept away by a cyclone young Dorothy Gale and her dog, Toto, find
themselves in a strange land called Oz. Here she meets the Munchkins and joins the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion on
an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City, to find the all powerful Wizard of Oz.
The original 1939 movie starred Judy Garland as Dorothy. Her travel companions were the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the
Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger). Frank Morgan played the Wizard of Oz as well as several other
characters.
The rubies are not real, and the shoes are worn about the edges. But Dorothy's ruby slippers (one of several surviving pairs)
have been one of the most popular attractions at the National Museum
of American History since 1979.
